Beauty Schools - Colleges, Institutes, Courses

More and more people are taking the time to pamper themselves to compensate for the high stress schedule they have. This means taking time to have their hair or makeup done, or get a massage or other beauty treatments.

This career is in high demand with a very competitive market, but it's a great opportunity for anyone with a creative flair and who works well with people to do something to help people and have work they enjoy.

Beauty Schools - Colleges, Institutes, Courses

If this sounds like a chance for you, look into the variety of beauty schools out there to find your niche. You can look into beauty colleges that specialize in one skill, or you can take general beauty courses that cover everything. It's a large field with many choices, so decide what interests you most.

Cosmetology School or Esthetician School

Cosmetology is the general word for overall hair, makeup and skin beauty treatments, so if you take a cosmetology course, you will dabble in every aspect of all beauty services.

You will learn about working with hair and about how to maintain the natural health of your hair and scalp, you will learn how to braid and color hair, how to do intricate makeup design and how to do facials, manicures and pedicures, among a variety of other things.

Your core curriculum will also include esthetic basics like skin analysis and care, facial massage and hair removal. You can do these courses at a cosemetology institute or as a distance course, or if you choose to specialize more in hair, you can attend hair design school, which will give you a sampling of other general courses, but focus more on the hair techniques.

Doing an online program can earn you either a certificate, an associate's degree, or even a bachelor's degree in cosmetology, and you can expect to dedicate a minimum of 10 hours per week, depending on the degree you are looking for. To be accepted into a cosmetology course, you at least need a GED or high school diploma.

Once the cosmetology training is complete, and if you have earned a bachelor's degree, many people continue on to get a master's degree in business management in order to one day open their own beauty salon. To practice in the field, you will need to become licensed with your state once your courses are complete.

Makeup School

If you want to specialize in one area and not focus on all aspects of cosmetology, one of your choices is makeup school. If you enrol in a makeup program, some of the courses you have available to you are hygiene, analysis of facial types and shapes, concealing blemishes, preparing the makeup, shaping eyebrows, day, night and bridal makeup, mature and male makeup.

You can work for a certificate, which with intensive study can take about 2 1/2 months, or you can get your diploma, which is about a 5 month course and has the same content but goes into more detail of blending colors, advanced eye techniques and using lighting.

Either of these can trigger your career as a mekup artist, but the more training and experience, the better your job prospects are. If you would like to learn about makeup techniques but focus more on skin care and health, then esthetician school can provide that concentration.

Nail School

You can also choose to specialize in nails and become a professional nail technician. If you enrol in nail school, you will practice working with artificial nails, doing nail art, performing manicures and pedicures and also learn about salon management, ethics and client relations.

At nail school, you will go beyond the training you get at a cosmetology academy, and once you complete the course, which can take between 200-500 hours, you must take your state's licensing exam.

There are many different types of beauty courses: some specializing and some giving you a general overview, but regardless of the one you choose, entering the field of beauty will be a rewarding career that can give you room to grow and even one day start your own business.
