Training and Education
A spa school has many separate areas of study, so you have the choice of getting an overall balanced education or specializing in one of the fields. You can choose from cosmetology, massage therapy, esthetics or nail technology. Each one offers the training you need to either work in a spa, country club or health care center or even open your own business, as business administration and management schools or taught in each course, but once you finish your certificate courses, you will be required to get a license in your desired field. Esthetics Class Description
Esthetics essentially has to do with taking care of the skin; protecting it from damage and moisturizing it to look healthy and natural. There is more education and awareness on the importance of proper skin products and maintenance, so part of your job will be to counsel your clients on proper skin regimes. You will show them techniques to apply the proper products, and you when providing services, you will employ techniques to relax them as well as stimulate the blood flow and circulation. In esthetics classes, you will learn about ancient and current techniques of skin therapy, including performing facials, mud wraps, milk baths, microdermabrasion and many other techniques. In addition, you will also take classes in management skills, business administration, finance and human resources, to give you the tools you need to run your own business. Finally your esthetician training will include courses in hair removal, makeup application and blending. You can get an esthetician certificate in as little as 6 months, and it will prepare you for more than an entry level position, as you will also gain hands-on experience with an internship usually held at a school run and supervised spa.
In about 8 weeks, you could also be holding a certificate in nail technology, preparing you to work in a salon or running your own manicure business. You will take courses in shaping, polishing and protecting, as well as applying artificial nails and tips, and providing full manicures and pedicures. As with the other programs, you will also take classes in business management and administration to give you a more balanced education. You will also have a supervised internship at spa school, where you can practice your skills and start building up your customer database. Cosmetology Course Description In cosmetology classes, you will learn a little bit of everything, with a focus on hair styling, designing, coloring and cutting. You will also learn barber skills, like how to shave, chemical treatments, chemistry, anatomy, proper sanitation of the instruments and business skills like sales, marketing and communication. You will also learn esthetician skills, like skin treatments and facials, as well as manicures and pedicures, allowing you to later work in many domains, like as a manicurist, esthetician, hair dresser, shampoo person or electrologist. Cosmetology is the best program to go into when you haven't yet decided on just one area to focus on. You can complete this course in 9-24 months, but you will then need to sit a licensing exam to be certified to work. Requirements for Your License For licensing, each state has a different requirement to take the exam offered by the Board of Cosmetology, but the average necessity is about 1500-3000 hours of training and a GED to be eligible to sit the licensing exam for an esthetician or cosmetologist, and about 750-1500 hours of training and a GED to become licensed as a nail technician. You also usually have to be 18 years old to be eligible, although in some states the minimum age is 16. Career Salary
